Serial number

Also called: VIN, HUD serial number

The manufacturer's unique identifier for a manufactured home section, used on titles, loans, and insurance.

Each section of a manufactured home has a serial number assigned by its manufacturer, recorded on the data plate and stamped on the steel frame. It is the identifier that ties together the title, the HUD label, the loan, and the insurance policy.

A multi-section home has one serial number per section, and they are usually related but not identical, commonly the same base number with an A/B suffix. Both must appear on the paperwork for a double-wide.

Lenders and insurers will ask for it, and a mismatch between the serial number on the title and the one on the frame is a genuine obstacle to closing. Verify them against each other rather than trusting the listing.
